September

I hope everyone had a relaxing three day weekend. I also hope temperatures hold and we are able to have four full days of classes. We are slowly working into our schedule :)

If you have not joined the PTA yet, please know it is never too late. It is four dollars for your membership and the PTA is a tremendous organization of hardworking individuals helping students and teachers.

Please check with your child about supplies. There have been some additions and modifications to the list and I appreciate your flexibility in securing these items.

Also please discuss each evening or afternoon with your child about homework. I will daily go over all work that is due the following schoolday at the end of our day. This allows students an opportunity to make sure they have written down assignments and are using their planners. Check those planners daily. I was a little…ok I was quite concerned Friday when eight students were given incomplete notices or late work notices. This is not acceptable. Those receiving notices should have shown them to you and need your signature and are to be returned to me. Hopefully this is just a period of adjustment and not a preview of what lies ahead.

I am looking forward to a great year. Please visit the site regularly and I will do my best to keep articles current.

UPCOMING DATES
September 21 12:45 – 2:00 Sunset Home visit

Parent Teacher Conference Week !!!!!
Please be thinking of times that would work for you
  for scheduling a conference.

October 29 9:00 – 11:30 field trip to Woodland Cemetery
I will need four or five parents to accompany us on
this wonderful adventure. Let me know if you are
      interested.

October 31 Halloween

Welcome to a new school year. I hope this year proves to be both successful academically as well as an entertaining year. For those who were able to come to Meet the teacher Night, I thank you. It is a pleasure to begin to put names and faces together.

We have begun the year by going over class and school rules. The majority are the same rules they have heard over and over. In general all of my rules can be summarized as being Prompt, Prepared, Responsible, and Participating. Following those few rules will lead to success.

Lockers and books have been issued and we are slowly beginning to fall into a routine. I prefer to move slowly at first . This saves time later when it would become necessary to repeat and refocus on itrems I felt should have been mastered.

A few students still need to return student handbook forms. They have been given a second copy. There are also some who still have a few supplies to take care of. Thank you for your help in securing these items.

Stay in touch,

September 9, 2006

I want to begin by congratulating the students on their fabulous behavior this past Tuesday and Wednesday. The substitute raved about how wonderful they were. It is so nice to hear those reports. I apologize for my absence, but as some of you know my father was taken by ambulance to Barnes Hospital in St. Louis and I needed to be with my family. He is home now and we take everything a day at a time. I thank you for your kind thoughts and prayers.

We look forward to a visit from Heather Schullian’s father Monday. He has quite a collection of snakes I am told and will be visiting our class room. I extend to all parents and grandparents the opportunity to visit us and share an interesting talent or hobby or career. The exposure is priceless to the students and your involvement is greatly appreciated and noted.

Please remember that Wednesday, September 13 is an institute day for teachers and that classes will not be in session. I am sure your children will remind you. :)

Also this Friday, September 15th is our initial visit to Sunset Home. We are part of the Adopted Grandparents Program sponsored by the Excahnge Club. Our first trip allows for the students and residents to meet and begin to establish a relationship. I mentioned to them that photographs are a great way to begin conversations. I encourage each student to bring pictures of their family or from a vacation to help break the ice.

Have a great week.

I am so pleased to say that I feel the beginning of the school year has been fantastic. I am very pleased with the behaviors, attitudes, and general responsibility of the students. I just want to communicate a couple of items to you since Curriculum Night is 3 weeks away. Please know that I will notify you daily should your child have late, incomplete, or missing work. I will do this by sending home with your child a PINK paper to be signed by you and returned the next day. Assignments in question should be attached to the form when returning. Also I send home each Friday a form, also in PINK, alerting you to any graded work that has received a grade lower than a C-. This also is to be signed and returned letting me know that you are aware . I do not intend for Pink papers to be upsetting, but I do find it to be a quick and successful means of communication bewteen home and school. Also daily planners are given to your child…daily:). At the end of the day we review the planner as a class and highlight any homework. Ask your child to see this. This too is another means of staying in touch. I look forward to seeing you at Curriculum Night, September 26.

Thank you for your support in the education of your child,

WHEW!

Congratulations on some of the most incredible science projects ever submitted. I was thrilled to have them on display outside the classroom. Research papers were turned in this past Friday. This had been a culmination to our work on World War II. I hope to have these all graded by this Friday and they will be avaiable for display on the board outside our room. New novels have begun this past week as well as the return to our science text. Report card were sent home on the 31st. Please look this over with your child and sign the envelope so it may be returned. FIELD TRIP WEDNESDAY!!!!Students and chaperones need to arrive by 6:45. We will take attendance, use the restroom, and board the buses. Please be on time.
Remember…no food …no drink on the bus!!!!I am checking games, CD’s, and DVD’s that are coming on the trip. Remember your lunch money!!!! If you have questions, let me know. Flour babies went rather well. The journalling and discussions were enlightening. We read a novel by Eve Bunting to accompany our experience. Thank you for your support during this time.

February 17, 2006

I know you are tired of hearing this, but time is running out on science projects. They are due between March 6 – 8. With the amount of class time devoted to these there is absolutely NO REASON why a student should not have one completed. I will be doing another update on them Tuesday. If concerns arise, I will be calling you. Brooks Schofield has been very generous helping students generate fabulous covers for their written reports to accompany their projects. Once projects are in, they will be displayed in the hallway for about two weeks. I hope you will have an opportunity to come by and view them.

Congratulations to Elise Ehresman and Alissa Morris for their wonderful work and representation at the spelling bee. Both girls deserve a big hand and a thank you for representing us so well. :)

As a project for READ WEEK the PTA is asking each classroom to select a country and make a wall display. The display may include food, games, holidays etc from that country. Our classs voted to have Germany be our country. Should you have items or suggestions that we could use, please let us know. Our class president and officers are in charge of this project. Breanna Schofield and Jazmine Harvey have taken the initiative to head this for our class and I am greatly appreciative and salute their leadership.

Some midterms still need to be returned. Thank you.

Please keep communication open between home and school, but also keep it open between parent and student. They have a great deal to share.

I have a favor to ask. I am in need of someone to do some copying of materials this next week to aid in our preparation of ISAT. If you are available some morning or afternoon please let me know. I will have everything ready . Thank you in advance.

Also thank you for the delicious treats on Valentine’s Day. I think the students had a very nice time. A special thank you to Darla Milks for organizing and for her contributions. Also thank you to the parents that came by to share in the celebration. It is always pleasant to have you with us. Join us anytime.

Please remember that midterms will be sent home today. Use this as an update on how your child is doing. Daily papers should be an indication and the grades should not come as a surprise.
Please return the midterm signed asap.

Tomorrow is our Valentine Party. Students were issued a classlist and cards will be distributed tomorrow afternoon. We will have treats and a time for students to socialize.

Wednesday is a half day of school for the students due to in-services for teachers. Keep in mind that lunch will not be served on this day. We are also scheduled for a character education assembly as well. Remind your child that he should have with him at all times an independent reading book. There will be time set aside on this morning for independent reading. Should your child wish to bring a small nutritious snack , he may do so.

Friday is a no classes day for students due to an institute for teachers. Monday is Presidents’ Day. Enjoy the four day weekend.

Please be watching carefully the number of days remaining until projects are due in science. Ample class time has been allowed and some students have done their entire project at school. There are NO EXCUSES for projects not to be submitted on time. ( March 6-8 )

We have with us each Monday, from Quincy University, a clinical student. Her name is Mrs. Reed. It is always nice to have another set of hands and eyes.

Always remember that you are welcome in the classroom anytime. Your presence is always welcome both to me and your child. It is requested that you follow policy and that you check in through the West office after coming through security prior to arriving at the classroom. This is just standard policy.

Thank you for your continued support in the education of your child.

Thank you and congratulations to the students for a repectful and successful lock-in. I was extremely pleased with all behaviors. I also want to thank you for bringing your child and picking your child up on time. It showed tremendous consideration. Thanks!

Please remember tomorrow is a half day of school for the students. We dismiss at noon. Lunch is NOT being served.

Friday is our next visit to Sunset Home. We will be celebrating HAT DAY with the home. Please help your child locate a favorite, fun, or unique hat to wear on this outting.

Keep watching for PINK notes coming home. D’s and F’s are sent on Friday accompanied with the infamous PINK paper. Please sign and return.

Finally, report card envelopes ned to be returned as soon as possible.

Remember to contact me with any questions you may have.

Oops! One more topic. I have a growing concern about attendance. Remember that each day you child misses is missed instruction, practice, and discussion. I can supply homework and assignments, but I cannot repeat the instruction.
